Scar And Keloid
Problems & Treatment
A keloid is a type of raised, hairless and rubery scar tissue, and can be pink, red, skin-colored or darker than the surrounding skin.
Anyone can suffer from a keloid scar but people with darker skin are more prone to developing them.
Keloids form after suffering from damage to the skin, even from acne.
Keloids form when the skin is trying to heal itself and more collagen is produced than normal.
They are usually painless and harmless, but can be very unsightly. In rare cases, keloid can be painful or itchy.
Some people have skin which is unfortunately more prone to forming keloid than others.
There are a number of treatment options available.
Treatment options are as below:
Keloid and scar injection
A type of steroid is injected into the affected area, repeated every 6 weeks over 3-4 visits.
Fractional laser scar treatment
A type of Laser called a Fractional CO2 Laser is used to heat shock the scarred tissue.
As mature keloids are formed from late stage collagen, the treatment causes new collagen to grow in its place, which is easier to flatten and reduce the visibility of the scar.
This treatment is especially effective for newly formed keloids.
Revision of scar and keloid surgery
Scar revision is surgery to improve or reduce the appearance of poorly healed scars and keloids.
It can help make the scar less noticeable but does not completely erase it. There is some risk of recurrence.
Scar medication and cream
Topical silicone gel creams and sheets are applied to a keloid.
With repeated treatments the keloids a gradually flattenned, and the colour returns towards the normal skin color.
The number of treatments required depends on the severity of the keloid.
